Anatomical changes in the seed coat structures of three Abelmoschus species (Moench.) at different moisture content levels

Seeds of six accessions representing three Abelmoschus species (A. esculentus, A. moschatus, and A. tetraphyllus) were predried to three moisture content levels (5%, 9%, and 13%). The seed coat structure of each species or accession was investigated through light and scanning electron microscopies to compare the anatomical structures and possibly explain their role in hardseededness and impermeability. Seed coat and palisade thickness were affected by dessication, which caused the seed coat to contract and the palisade cell layer to thicken. The prominent echinulations and papillae of the exotesta in the wild species contributed to impermeability, while the contraction of the seed coat and the thickening of the palisade layer added to hardening of the seed coat
