Mango fruitfly: population fluctuation and effectiveness of bait trap for its control

Fruitfly population in mango starts to build up as early as December to January and progressively increases in density reaching a peak in May and June then decline from July towards November. Environmental factors like rainfall, temperature and relative humidity did not influence the density of the population. The use of bait trap with poisoned methyl eugenol (PME) as a control method was tested and results showed higher adult catch in traps applied with PME applied every 10 days than trap only during peak of fruitfly population i.e., January to July, is as effective as applying bait throughout the year. Moreover, the effectiveness duration of PME is within a 14-day period, thus, there is a need to apply PME every 14 days to effectively control fruitfly
