Ecology of insect pests and beneficial organisms in hybrid and inbred rice production systems in Isabela [Philippines]

The abundance, richness and peak of colonization of insect pests and beneficial organisms were assessed in two rice production systems in Isabela [Philippines] during the wet and dry season of 2001. These informatiion will serve as a guide for farmers on what management options to implement while preserving ecological balance. Results showed that the brown planthopper, white-backed planthopper, green leafhopper, and rice bug were the most dominant herbivores. Likewise, spiders, lady beetles, parasitic wasps and plant bugs were the common natural enemies noted. Incidence of these organisms differed in terms of peak of colonization but generally peaked during tillering, panicle initiation and after harvest (in the rice stubbles)
