Correlation studies in American upland cotton Gossypium hirsutum L. for yield and yield affecting components

The four American upland cotton genotypes namely Rahmani, Reshmi, CRIS- 9 and Chandi were evaluated for their performance for yield and yield components in CRBD with five replications at Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam during 1999. Simple correlation coefficients and coefficients of determination were calculated for 36 characters associations. The analysis of' variance showed that genotypes differed significantly for all the nine quantitative characters under study. Cultivars, c.v. Chandi developed its first sympodium at relatively lower main stem node number 4.6 against other cultivars main stem nodes from 5.0-6.0. Cultivar Reshmi produced significantly highest number 81.4 of fruiting points on 17.4 sympodial plant. The average boll weight of cultivar Reshmi was about (3.56g), which was highest as compared to other cultivars. The quantitative trait seed cotton yield showed significantly positive association. Their r and r2 values were (+0.496, +0.804, +0.742 and +0.522) and (0.246, 0.646, 0.551 and 0.273), respectively. These results revealed that a high yielding cultivar must have a higher number of sympodial branches and fruiting positions with high boll retention percentage leading to number of bolls/plant with increased average boll weight.
