The study on the response of asparagus to different population densities was conducted at DA-SMIARC-ROS for Crops in the Tupi experimental area in South Cotabato [Philippines] from 1996 to 1998. It aimed to determine the response of asparagus to different population densities and evaluate which of these population densities can give more profitable yield. Results showed that spear yield varied significantly among different population densities. The highest yield of 4,335.76 kg was obtained at a population density of 44,443 plants/ha. Lowest yield of 1,560 was obtained at population density of 16,667 plants/ha. It appeared that yield increased as plant population per hectare also increased. However, such was not the case with spear sizes. A greater number of small-size spears was produced at highest population density (44,443 plants/ha) while more medium to large size spears were produced at lowest plant density (16,667 plants/ha) and decreased correspondingly as plant density increased. Economic analysis showed that the biggest net profit was obtained at the highest plant density, with MRR value of 351%. As the plant density decreased, net benefit also decreased. Given this production trend, farmers can choose what plant density to adopt, depending on their financial capabilities and market demand
