The viability of producing vegetables year round using the Sorjan farming technology was shown through a demonstration trial at Leyte State Univ., Baybay, Leyte. Sorjan farming is a unique cropping system developed in Indonesia to make possible the growing of upland crops during wet season. In the trial, existing rice paddies measuring 3m x 30m were redug to a depth of about 2.0 feet then leveled. In between the paddies, the vegetable plots measuring 5 x 30m were also prepared. High value vegetable crop including sweet pepper, baby corn, sweet corn, muskmelon, watermelon, cucumber and ampalaya were grown from June 1999 to May 2000. In the paddies, glutinous rice was planted. The average monthly rainfall during the whole cropping season was high at 308.94 mm. Rainfall was distributed throughout the year which means that there was practically no dry months. Among the crops grown, ampalaya had the highest cost of production and this was due to added cost of putting up trellis for the crop and in wrapping individual fruits with plastic to prevent fruit fly infestation. The crops which had the least production cost were baby corn, sweet corn, muskmelon and watermelon. The highest profits were derived from growing muskmelon, ampalaya and watermelon because of their relatively high yields, despite the occurence of heavy rains when these were grown. Other crops like baby corn, sweet corn, sweet pepper and cucumber also gave positive returns but did not give as high returns as the first three crops. The trial thus showed that year round production of vegetables in Region 8 is possible under the Sorjan Farming system
