Growth response of two maize cultivars to soil compaction and texture

A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth response of two maize cultivars (Magic and Golden) to compaction using sandy loam, sandy clay loam and clay loam soils during Spring 2001. Compaction was accomplished by dropping 10 kg weight from 60 cm height at a rate of 0 and 20 beatings at field capacity. Maize plants were harvested 49 days after sowing and data regarding plant height and fresh weight of maize shoots were recorded. Shoots were analyzed for N, P and K concentration. Results revealed that soil compaction had an adverse effect on fresh weight of shoot; P concentration and N and P uptake in shoot, while soil texture has significant effect on plant height, fresh shoot weight and P concentration and its uptake. Interaction between soil texture and compaction was significant for fresh weight of maize fodder as well as P and K concentration and their uptake in shoot. Varietal response under compacted and non-compacted conditions was also found statistically significant in some cases, but interaction between soil texture and variety and their combined effect was non-significant for all the growth parameters.
