Effect of different rates of nitrogen and phosphorus on growth and yield of maize (Zea mays L.)

Investigations to determine the effects of various nitrogen and phosphorus applications on the growth and yield of maize variety "Golden" were carried out at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during the year 2000. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design. The net plot size measured 3.6m x 7m. The different nitrogen and phosphorus applications were 0-0, 60-50, 90-70, 120-90, 150-110 and 180-130 kg N and P2O5 ha-1. The crop was planted on August 1, 2000 and was harvested on November 6, 2000. Following conclusions were derived from the investigation. Various nitrogen and phosphorus applications affected significantly plant height, cob-bearing plants, grain number per cob, 1,000- grain weight stalk yield and harvest index. Application of nitrogen and phosphorus did not influence total number of plants per plot and cob number per plant. Application of 180-130 Kg N and P2O5 kg ha-1 produced significantly the maximum grain yield 4.62 t ha-1. Whereas, significantly the minimum grain yield 2.11 t ha-1 was given by control. It may be concluded from these results that suitable dose is essential for obtaining higher grain yield of maize. However, the present findings clearly showed that 180 - 130 kg N and P2O5 ha-1 gave the maximum grain yield 4.62 t ha-1 and was proved to b the best.
