Effect of different sowing dates on the growth and yield of wheat cultivars

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different sowing dates on the growth and yield of wheat cultivars in the agronomy experimental field, Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam during winter season of 1998-1999. Homogenous seeds of three wheat cultivars namely Sarsabz, T-J.83 and Mehran were planted on four dates viz., 1st and 15th November, 1st and 151h December using a four replicated randomized complete Block Design (factorial) having a net plot size of 2x3 meter (6 m2). Observations were recorded on various agronomic characters and were subjected to analysis of variance to test the superiority of mean values LSD test was applied. It was observed that sowing date had significant (P0.01) effect on plant height, number of tillers/plant, number of spikelets/spike, spike length, number of grains/spike, grain weight/plant, seed index and seed yield/plot and per hectare respectively. Wheat planted on 15th November produced significantly maximum grain yield, thus increase in grain yield was associated with the significant improvement in all yield attribute study. Further delays in planting or before 15th November significantly reduced grain yield, this reduction was mainly due to reduction in all yield components. Similarly cultivars also had significant influence on all yield characters studied. Among cultivars Mehran produced greater grain yield, this increase was associated with the increase of all characters studied. The second best cultivar was T-J.83 while Sarsabz displayed lowest grain yield. The interaction between sowing date and cultivar was significantly only for number of spikelets/spike, and grain weight/plant. While other characters were not effected significantly by the interaction of sowing dates and cultivars.
