The experiment was carried out in the years 1998-01. A comparison of fruit quality and storability was made in Central Poland between Gala and three red-coloured mutants of Gala grown on M.26 rootstock. In the experiment the fruit size and colour were estimated. At harvest and after storage the sugar content, acidity and firmness were measured. The fruits were harvested when the starch index for Gala was 3-4. After 3 years of investigation the fruits of Gala Must were the largest whereas Gala Roual the smallest. The difference in fruit maturity of the studied cultivars occurred in each season. The fruits of Gala mutants ripened earlier than those of Gala. Acidity and sugar content measured at harvest time and after storage were similar for all cultivars. The apples of Gala Must showed the highest flesh firmness after storage in the two first years of the study
