Influence of herbicides on biosynthesis of antifungal resorcinols by rye seedlings

Grains of winter rye cv. Dankowskie Zlote grown under laboratory conditions were treated with the herbicides Venzar 80 WP and Pyramin 65 WP. The yield of seedling mass as well as the content alk(en)ylresorcinols and homologue composition were evaluated. Both applied herbicides slightly affected fresh and dry weight of rye seedlings, whereas the amounts of alk(en)ylresorcinols were generally higher in treated plants than in control ones. This stimulation of the biosynthesis of alkylresorcinols, together with their already recognized antimicrobial activity, may thereby contribute to the increased resistance of rye seedlings to external fungal pathogens
