Distribution of Stemborer species in semi-arid eastern Kenya

The spatial and temporal distribution of stemborer species in maize was investigated in farmers' fields in six agroecological zones: Upper Midland Zone 2 (UM2). UM3. UM4. Lower Midland Zone 3 (LM3). LM4 and LM5, of the semi-arid Eastern Kenya, during the long and short rains of 1996. The stemborers that infested maize in the six AEZs were: Chilo partellus. Sesamia calamistis, Cryptophlebia leucotreta and Busseola fusca. C. partellus was the most abundant and widely distributed stemborer, but was more prevalent in the lower altitude zones (LM3-5). C. leucotreta and S. calamistis were more common in the higher elevation zones (UM2 - 4). C. partellus was mainly responsible for the early to late season infestation of maize in the LM3-5 zones. C. leucotreta and S. calamistis occurred in relatively low numbers and infested maize mostly from the middle to the end of the season especially in the UM-zones.
