Response of three guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub) genotypes to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization

A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive seasons (1997/98 and 1998/99) in the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture at Shambat in order to study the response of three guar genotypes to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization under irrigation. The treatments consisted of three guar genotypes (HFG53), HFG182 and HFG363), three nitrogen levels (0, 40 and 80 kg N/ha) and two phosphorus levels (0 and 50 kg P2O5/ha). Urea (46%N) and triple super phosphate (48%P2O5) were used as sources of nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with four replications. The genotypes were designated to the main plots, whereas the fertilizer treatments were allotted to the subplots. The results showed that N had no significant effect on the growth or yield of any of the three guar genotypes studied. However, N caused a consistent, but insignificant, increase in plant height, seed yield and number of pods/plant, and a significant decrease in harvest index. On the other hand P resulted in a significant increase in seed yield and harvest index, and a consistent, but insignificant, increase in plant height the genotypes did not differ significantly in vegetative growth and yield. However, HFG182 and HFG363 exhibited better vegetative growth and gave consistently higher seed yield and number of pods/plant than HFG53
