The paper summarizes results of a geobiocoenological research carried out at the Jelsovy les locality where the wettest plant communities of the National Nature Reserve Sur have been preserved. Relatively drier edges of the area are formed by segments of the groups of types of geobiocoens (gtg) Ulmi-fraxineta populi superiora pannonica. The greatest part of the locality is covered by gtg Fraxini-alneta inferiora pannonica, at the most inundated sites transgressing to the gtg Salici fragilis-alneta inferiora pannonica. In Carbonate Modal Chiernitsa (Calcaric Mollic Fluvisol) of this wettest gtg the carbonate content increases from the lower layers (Equiv. CaCO3 = 0.10%, pH H20 = 6.46) to the upper layers (Equiv. CaCO3 = 4.75%, pH H20 = 7.06). However, the maxi-mum value of the actual soil reaction was detected at a depth of 10-20 cm (Equiv. CaCO3.1.30%, pH H20 = 7.35). This phenomenon can be connected with presence of aragonite shells accumulated owing to dying of little organisms in the topsoil. The solubility of these shells is relatively low compared with the solubility of chemically and biochemically coagulated carbonates dominating the lower parts of the soil profile
