Dynamics of the size, sexual and age structure of the herds of red deer was observed in the year 1999 in two mountains of Western Slovakia, namely in Tribec Mts. and Povazsky Inovec Mts.. The obtained results were compared with the records published by Findo (1995) from Polana Mts. in Central Slovakia. Average size of the herd during the year fluctuated in Povazsky Inovec Mts. from 2.5 to 7.3 with the maximum of 52 individuals and in Tribec Mts. from 5.5 to 10.7 with the maximum of 50 individuals (Table 2). Types of herds are divided according to the methodology by Findo (1985) with the aim to compare the results. There was found in both localities very unfavourable ratio of sex to the detriment of stags as well as very insufficient number of fully mature males at the age 6 years and more, and particularly 10 years old and older
