Bearing in mind that the Malaysian plantation sector is going through a critical phase and the new millenium poses new challenges, the purpose of this article is to review some industry-related issues. The first part describes the evolution of the Malaysian rubber and oil palm industries, and technology and scientific innovations will be examined. Likewise, inherent weaknesses are discussed, together with new globalization requirements. We will analyze the implications of all of the above on the technical and social-economic pattern of the plantation sector. Lastly, we will discuss the most convincing development initiatives and pertinent policy guidelines aimed at protecting the sector from global market forces, as well as from domestic social and economic limitations.

Este artículo se preparó para revisar algunos temas relacionados con el Sector Malayo de las plantaciones, ya que la industria atraviesa una fase critica y se ha entrado al nuevo milenio de cara a una serie de desafíos. En primer lugar, el propósito es analizar la historia evolutiva de las industrias del caucho y de la palma de aceite en Malasia, y luego las innovaciones científicas y tecnológicas, e igualmente identificar las debilidades inherentes que han surgido, examinar las nuevas exigencias del proceso de globalización y debatir las implicaciones de todo lo anterior sobre el tejido técnico y socioeconómico del sector de las plantaciones. Al final se espera poder identificar las iniciativas de desarrollo más convincentes y las direcciones políticas pertinentes que podrían proteger al sector de las fuerzas globales del mercado y de los limitantes socioeconómicos internos.
