The lethal wilt is not the African vascular wilt caused by Fusarium | La marchitez letal no es la marchitez vascular afrinaca causada por Fusarium

anglais. A new disease, called lethal wilt (or ML in Spanish), is the responsible for the death of more than 14,500 oil palms in the Colombian East Zone. The cumulative losses to November 2003 are estimated in more than 100 Ha. In its origins, this lethal disease was considered the African vascular wilt. However, the experiments showed here demonstrate that the new disease is not related to the African fusariosis. Due to the lacking of knowledge about the causal agent of the disease, several hypotheses have been proposed including the presence of phytoplasms, bacteria and fungi. Inside the last hypothesis, experiments with 52 isolates from Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium spp. were isolated from sick palms and inoculated in oil palm plantlets. These plantlets did not show any of the typical (either external or internal) African-vascular-wilt symptoms reported for oil palm plantlets. As a main conclusion, the new disease present in this region is different to the African vascular wilt caused by F. oxysporum f.sp. elaeidis

espagnol; castillan. Un nuevo disturbio, llamado marchitez letal, ha ocasionado la muerte a más de 14.500 palmas en la Zona Oriental de Colombia. Las pérdidas acumuladas al mes de noviembre de 2003 son de más 100 hectáreas. Inicialmente se consideró que esta enfermedad letal era la marchitez vascular del ¦frica. Sin embargo, los experimentos mostrados aquí demuestran que el nuevo disturbio no se relaciona con la fusariosis africana. Debido al desconocimiento del agente causal de la enfermedad, varias hipótesis han sido propuestas incluyendo la acción de fitoplasmas, bacterias y hongos. Dentro de esta última hipótesis, experimentos con 52 aislamientos de Fusarium oxysporum y Fusarium spp. aislados de palmas enfermas fueron inoculados en plántulas de palma. Las plántulas no mostraron expresión de los síntomas externos o internos típicos de la marchitez vascular reportados para plántulas de palma de aceite. Como conclusión, el disturbio de esta zona es diferente a la marchitez vascular de ¦frica.
