Methods for determining the optimal time of application and the efficacy of fungicides and fungicide combinations in controlling sugar beet leaf spot (Cercospora beticola) have been studied. Visual method based on monitoring and determining the average number of spots on the leaves of sugar beet was used to determine the right time for controlling Cercospora beticola, as well as the automatic meteorological stations (Micro Metos) using a computer program for Cercospora beticola forecast (DIV-daily infection value). The study has shown the automatic station to be a suitable and reliable tool determining the optimum time of fungicide application. There were no significant differences between this method and visual observation as expressed by the disease index. The fungicides and fungicide combinations with the contact fungicide Betafen TS exhibited highly significant efficacy expressed through the disease index relative to the untreated control. Combinations of the systematic fungicides and Betafen TS proved more efficacious in controlling the leaf spot than any of the preparations applied individually. Belated fungicide application had significant effect on the quantitative (root and white sugar yields per hectare) and qualitative (sugar and polarization sugar contents) traits of sugar beet. Once the first spots appeared on the leaves only preventive treatment proved effective, whereas delayed applications significantly reduced root yield, sugar content per hectare and other traits.
