Bioindication of air pollution in Pirot [Serbia, Serbia&Montenegro] by use of lichens

Bioindication of air pollution in Pirot by use of lichens has not been done in Pirot until now. On 42 investigated points, it has been found 27 lichens taxa from 14 genera. By calculating index of Atmospheric Purity (IAP), it has been found hat there are two zones with different levels of air pollution ("lichens desert" and "transitional zone"). The most sensitive species to air pollution in Pirot are Buelia punctata, Hypogimnia physoides, Melanelia exasperatula, M. glabratula and most tolerant Lecanora muralis, L. pulicaris, Xanthoria parietina, Phaeophyscia orbicularis, Physcia adscedens.
