In this paper are examined the interconnectedness and mutuality of links and relationship between rural areas and tourism. Tourism is inevitably an alternative direction of economic development in the large rural spaces of the Republic of Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro). The paper analyses and favorably ascertains the potentials here, which are important if Serbia is to take part in modern processes of development and integration. Also, in the paper are presented the experiences of several other European countries in developing their tourist business in rural spaces.
