The prospect of shade trees in impaired Belgrade townscape [Serbia&Montenegro]

Paper discusses the present state of Belgrade shade trees, and proposes the methods of their enhancement. On the basis of multi-year research, it shows their status, morphological and aesthetic properties, actual ecological functionality level, and the limiting factors concerning their overall functionality in the future. Main sources shade trees' poor state are identified as relatively old age of numerous tree individuals, long period of improper maintenance, pronounced environmental deterioration, poor soil conditions, inadequate nursery production, poor quality of young transplants, vague legislation, etc. Paper stresses the significance of existing high-quality old tree individuals as specific keystones of new street greenscape.
