Alluvial aquifer is on large scale used for the water supply of the settlements in wide and spacious valley of the greatest river in the Republic of Serbia (Serbia&Montenegro). However, sources, utilized for these needs, show great content of nitrate in groundwaters, which limits their further exploitation. The causes of such occurrences might be intense agricultural production and use of artificial fertilizers as well as wastewaters both from industry and from sewerage works. Paper presents the results gained through perennial research on this problem, which is one of the most serious regarding exploitation of the groundwaters of this aquifer.
