Two cases of sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) in German Shepherd dogs are described. In both dogs, ascites non-responsive to conservative therapy was the predominated sign. In the first case the diagnosis was made postmortally, in the second case presumptive diagnosis was made by exploratory laparotomy and confirmed by histological examination. In the first patient, pathologic lesions were localised in pleural cavity as well, which has not been documented yet. Recent knowledge about etiology, clinical signs and diagnosis are discussed. Due to a limited amount of information about SEP in veterinary literature, the discussion also includes details from human medicine.
