Alternative economic activities in Estonian countryside have been acknowledge as a good opportunity for increasing income of rural people, for improving employment opportunities, for satisfying domestic and foreign market demand. There are old traditional industries which have undergone certain decrease due to agricultural and land reforms and due to loosing market opportunities and relatively or totally new industries like wild berry and mushroom cultivation or chinchilla farming. In the future cooperative marketing organisations are needed in order to market the growing production volume successfully. At the same time the cooperatives of small alternative enterprises could perform much more services for their members: information and training, production analysis and consultation, promotion of generic products etc. The EU membership opens new opportunities for rural development in forms of special programs, in forms of international cooperation and sharing the experience of the Western activities, and at the same time in many cases helps to ensure local markets for local producers
