The growth of needles and shoots of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) on a sandy dune
2003
Mandre, M. | Ots, K. (Estonian Agricultural University, Tartu (Estonia). Forest Research Institute)
The aim of the present study was to determine the variation of morphometric parameters of the shoots and needles of Scots pine growing on the highest dune, Tootusemaegi, in the Haeaedemeeste dune field situated in Southwest Estonia. The branches for morphological analyses were collected from the pines in 1985, 1986 and 2000. The morphometric parameters of the needles and shoots of Scots pine were found to vary within a wide range. The growth of needles and shoots was the slowest on the top of the dune, where the growth substrate, sand, contains notably less nutrients and water than needed for optimum growth of trees
