An experiment where five N-fertilizer doses was applied to a rotation of three food crops; upland rice-corn-corn planted between the row of an alley crop, Gliricidia sepium has been carried out. At the fourth year of the experiment, observation of the alley crop root pattern using 32P was conducted. 32P was placed at three locations near the corn crop. Results showed that 32P detected in the alley crop leaves was only 1.7 percent of the of 32P in the corn leaves. Results obtained that four years after the alley crop rows were established, their roots have not yet invated the area where food crops were planted. However, although 32P detected in the alley crop leaves was still low it already shows that the roots of the alley crop has already reached the food crops area especially at the rows of food crops receiving plenty organic matter and N-fertilizer. Based on the results obtained from this experiment, after 4 years of establishing an alley crop, their root pattern should be checked year by year, so that, whenever their roots have heavily invaded the food crop area, then the old alley crop should be replaced by new planted crops
