The aim of this research is to study the soil properties and assay to classify the critical land exist on district of Paninggahan, Solok. Soil properties and its classification was determined based on soil profile description and chemical analysis. Six soil profiles were described to represent six locations based on different of slope, landform and parent materials. The results of this study showed that soil properties in the research location have a large variation. Soil texture varies from loam to clay, crumb to blocky for soil structure, very friable to firm for soil consistency, and shallow to moderately depth for depth of soil solum. Soil chemical properties have indicated that soil pH, Ca-exchangeable and base saturation of soil which parent materials derived from lime stone were higher than soil derived from volcanic rock. According to Soil Taxonomy System (1994) were determined six soil variations existed in Paninggahan district i.e.: Lithic Rendolls, Litic Tropothents, Ustoxic Dystropepts, Typic Dystropepts, Typic Eutropepts and Typic Hapludults
