This experiment was done to know the response of maize to VAM (Gigaspora margarita) inoculation and sludge in an Andisols soil. The experiment was conducted in glasshouse, pest and disease laboratory, and agronomy laboratory at the Faculty of Agriculture, Brawijaya University, Malang from November 1999 until March 2000. The treatment consisted of two levels, namely with and without VAM inoculation, also sludge in four levels: 0 percent, 25 percent, 50 percent and 100 percent. The result showed that the inoculation of Gigaspora margarita gave the best result for almost all parameters, also the sludge treatment. The Gigaspora margarita inoculation accompanied by sludge treatment increased the amount of spores per 100-gram soil and increased the root infection intensity. Positive correlation was found between both variables (r = 0.97). The single effect of VAM significantly increased the P-content in plant tissue (937.50 mg/kg) with a P uptake efficiency of 33.9 percent and increased the yield of maize (47.33 g/plant). The sludge treatment accelerated the blossom of maize, increased the P content in plant tissue (1087.50 g/kg), increased the soil N after experiment, and increased the yield of maize (69.67 g/plant) whereas the best result was evident at an influenced the available soil P after experiment
