India ranks first as the largest producer of milk in the world and it can continue to hold the position if mastitis, a costliest diesease, confronting the dairy industry, is taken care of. The economic losses due to the mastitis are incurred due to reduced milk production, cost of veterinary services and medicines, shortened productive life, culling, and finally the replacement cost. Sub-clinical mastitis (SCM) is more prevalent, and average decrease in milk yield due to it was estimated to be 17.50% in India. The detection of SCM happens to be the first pre-requisite of a modern dairy establishment if the owners wish to avoid the economic losses in their herd. Early detection of SCM has always been a matter of great curiosity since SCM evinces no gross signs of inflammation. Successful containment of SCM involves rapid diagnosis which rests largely on the indirect tests that are confirmed, in turn, by the leucocyte content of the milk. Therefore, the study underreport was undertaken to assess the present grades of infection in sub-clinical mastitic cows.
