This paper attempts to define the role of Indian agricultural education and research in achieving food food security in the future. The specific context for this exercise is the alternative agricultural science paradigm,or the context of taking charge of the grand vedic agricultural experiment described by the author in earlier papers. From these two points of view sustainable farming is possible only if ecosystem health is ensured to farm/village. This means to achieve this will be specific to each farm and village. If this be accepted, the current mode of agricultural research aimed at formulating generalized packages of practices would need to give way to programms of interactive research with farmers on their own farms, and with farming communities in their own villages. Student learning would also have to be located largely in this setting rather than in the classroom. The role of universities and research institutes would become facilitatory. The outlines of this alternative role are sketched, lusing insights gaianed from traditional forms of village-level teaching and research, and from present-day natural farming research and teaching methods. Some key changes that would be needed in our national development strategy to support such a reorientation of agricultural education and research are suggested.
