Xylazine HCl, because of its properties like high therapeutic index, smooth induction and recoveries, ability to induce trunk immobilisation and excellent sedation has become a popular sedative in elephant anaesthetic practice. Supplementation of xylazine with Ketamine HCl to provide satisfactory analgesia is some times required while undertaking a painful procedure. Yohimbine HCl has been described as the best xylazine antagonist in a variety of species particulary elephants for its quick and irreversible action. However, information on the effects of these drugs on some vital parameters like mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rates in the elephants are greatly lacking and therefore, in the present experiment, attempts have been made to study these two important parameters with these drugs in Asian elephants Elephas maximus.
