Bio-efficacy of some synthetic insecticides and bio-pesticides against black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon infecting potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Garhwal Himachal

The relative field efficacy of nine synthetic insecticides viz., diazinon 20 EC, lindane 20 EC, quinalphos 25 EC, chlorpyriphos 20 EC, fenitrothion 50 EC, deltamethrin 2.8 EC, methylparathion 50 EC, methylparathion 2% dust, malathion 5% dust and biopesticides viz., NSKE (Achook 0.3 EC) and entomopathogenic bacterium (Bacillus thuriengiemis (Dipel 8L; var. Kurstaki) on potato (var. Kufri jyoti) were assessed against the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Huf.) for two years, i.e., 2000 and 2001 at fanner's field during rainy season at Ranichauri (1600 m a.s.l.) in Garhwal Himalayan region. Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2.0 kg/ha proved most effective treatment protection as well as production-wise both by recording lowest tuber damage (5.60 and 5.91 ) and highest tuber yield (178.70 and 177.40 q/ha) during the respective years followed by quinalphos~25 EC (2.0 kg/ha) where tuber damage and yield were 8.59 per cent and 170.36 q/ha during 2000 while during the year 2001, the tuber damage and yield were 8.08 per cent and 172.29 q/ha, respectively. In the treatment of chlorpyriphos 20 EC, the larval population was considerably very low i.e. 0.33 and 0.66 larva/3 m row at the time of digging the tubers during both the years. Highest mean net return (Rs. 41,488.0/ha) and highest cost/benefit ratio (CBR) (1:58.59) were obtained in chlorpyriphos 20 EC (2.0 kg/ha) treated plots, applied twice at initial growth stage and subsequent application at tuberization stage of the crop.
