Exfoliative vaginal cytology in breeding canines - a case report
2001
Simon, S. (Veterinary Dispensary, Elanad, Trissur (India). Veterinary Surgeon)
The vaginal epithelium of the bitch undergoes certain characteristic changes under the rising levels of oestrogen from mature follicles. It changes from a bistratified cuboidal epithelium to a stratified squamous epithelium of greater than 30 cell layers with every oestrous cycle. Based on this, exfoliative vaginal cytology could be used as a good alternative to progesterone assay or a reliable indirect oestrogen assay for timing mating in dogs. Vaginal cytology becomes an extremely important diagnostic aid whenever an infertility problem or abnormality in oestrous behaviour is believed to exist. The present report deals with use of exfoliative vaginal cytology to arrive at optimum time for mating successful breeding of a bitch.
