In the situation of energy deficiency in a cow's diet the release catecholamine helps to stimulate the release of free fatty acids (FFA) from fat deposit. The carbohydrate deficiency initiates starvation of cows. Rapid fatty beta-oxidation in the liver produces a high concentration of acetoacetyl-CoA, which generates ketone bodies. In our experiments cows with subnormal level of glucose 3 weeks after calving had a normal level of FFA. If FFA concentration in serum is above 0.3 mmol/l before calving, the subnormal level of glucose can be deteceted about 3 weeks later.
