[Accuracy of prediction of lean meat yield and backfat thickness from live measurements on pigs]

Phenotypic evaluation of carcass traits on live pigs is widespread at breeding centers and breeding farms in many countries of the world. There are several methods of phenotypic evaluation, however, one of the most progressive is usage of ultrasonic equipment. The ultrasonic apparatus PIGLOG 105 and RENCO are being used for measurements of backfat thickness and meat percentage on live breeding pigs. The objectives of the present study were, first, to compare backfat thickness and meat percentage data for pigs of Latvian White purebreed (n=82) and Latvian White improved with Yorkshire (n=26), obtained by PIGLOG 105, RENCO and control slaughtering methods and, second, to analyze ultrasonic leaness data for breeding pigs. Meat percentage at control slaughtering was by 1.7-2.5% higher than that determined by the apparatus PIGLOG 105 on live pigs. But lean meat content at control slaughtering and measured with RENCO on live pigs was more correct: by 0.1-1.3% lower.
