There is a tendency in the development of Latvian agriculture towards the enlargement of farms and advancement of crop growing technologies. This is conspicuous on the farms practising cereal production, its gross output in agriculture being estimated at 52-57 million lats. Thus, in 2000 the sowing area on 1.3% farms was 29.6% of the total sowing area in the country, whereas the total number of farms decreased by 26%. Such a trend allows carrying out the modernisation of production technologies. At the same time the renewal of tractors, tillage and harvesting machines is characterised by increased energy intensity, efficiency and decreased number of their total number. However, to a certain extent this process depends on the financial support by the state. When the finance for the technological advancement is insufficient, the poor provision of farms with modern machinery may restrain on-time and high-quality performance of farm operations.
