The main focus of this paper is the use of Richards' equation for soil water flow and on solute-spreading mechanisms in one or more dimensions. Model integration or model coupling of water flow and solute transport models is increasingly used toaddress complex environmental problems. In the final part of the paper we present a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis pertaining to these approaches
