A fast and effective way of analyzing soil nutrient deficiency through the minus-one element technique (MOET) is discussed. The technique is simple and does not require complicated and expensive equipment. It is based on the principle that the rice plant manifests nutrient deficiency through specific deficiency symptoms such as stunted growth, yellowing, and chlorotic patterns. The technology was tested at the PhilRice (Philippine Rice Research Institute) laboratory and was proven effective in determining soil nutrient deficiency. Field testing in Batac, Ilocos Norte (Philippines) was conducted to determine effectiveness of the technology on farm. MOET is farmer-friendly, simple, and sensitive diagnostic tool. It is easy to use on farm. The result of field testing in several sites in Batac, Ilocos Norte showed that MOET could be used in upland soils, but not limited to rice areas. Due to ease of use, practical application, and yield improvement, the member of MOET users had increased dramatically. The interest shown by farmers and rice extension workers is very encouraging.
