Growth and yield response of mung bean to variable seeding density and irrigation levels

Treatments comprised of three seeding densities i.e. (15 kg 20 kg and 25 kg seed ha-1 and four irrigation levels i.e. control, one irrigation at flowering, one irrigation at podding) and two irrigations; one at flowering and one at pudding. Crop was sown in July 2000 with the help of single row hand drill. Nitrogen and phosphorous were added at the rate of 20 and 60 kg ha-1, respectively. The seeding densities did not affect the biological yield significantly whereas irrigation levels had significant effects on biological yield. Seed yield was not significantly affected by seeding density but irrigation levels had significant affects on seed yield. The parameter of harvest index was not affect by irrigation but seeding densities had significant effects on harvest index. Both the factors in seeding density and irrigation levels, affected the plant height significantly having significant interaction. Seeding densities and irrigation levels had highly significant effects on the number of branches plant-1. Number of pads plant-1 were not significantly affected by seeding density while the irrigation levels had significant affects on this parameter. Number of seeds pod-1 were not significantly affected by seeding density and average number of seeds pod-1 ranged from 7.76 to 7.79. Irrigation levels had significant effects on seed number pod-1. Seeding density and irrigation levels affected 1000-seed weight significantly. Seeding density have highly significant effects on TDM except at 65 DAS where it as non-significant. Similarly irrigation levels also affected TDM significantly except at 83 DAS. Leaf dry matter was significantly affected by seeding density except at 65 and 83 DAS. The irrigation levels had also significant effects and leaf dry matter except at 83 DAS. Stem DM was significantly affected by seeding density except at 58 DAS. The irrigation levels significantly affected the stem dry weight except at 43 and 65 DAS. Dry weight of branches was not significantly affected by seeding density throughout the growth period. Irrigation levels have also non-significantly effects on dry weight of branches except at 51 and 65 DAS. Seedling density had no significant effects on pod dry weight, except at 83 DAS where maximum pod weight was 27.66 g m-2. Leaf area index was significantly affected by seeding density except at 51 and 65 DAS. On the basis of this experiments, it can be concluded that 20 kg seed ha-1 is suitable seed rate for mungbean and the most critical stage for water application is podding. If another irrigation is required, it should be applied at flowering.
