Present study involves the utilization of kai (Saccharum spontaneum) and sarkanda (Saccharum munja) for the production of furfural and active carbon under various experimental conditions. The results revealed that HCI as compared to H2SO4 was a better hydrolyzer activator for obtaining better yields of furfural and active carbon. The adsorption efficiency of the prepared active carbon was measured using iodine and methylene blue. A high grade active carbon was obtained with H2SO4 in the presence of ZnCl2, as a catalyst for both the raw materials. Comparing the raw materials, it was observed that kai furnished higher yield of furfural and active carbon while sarkanda yielded better quality active carbon.
