One of the basic concept of Unani system of medicine is temperament. The concept involves number of disciplines like genetics, physiology, biochemistry, enzymology, endocrinology and thermodynamics, etc. The article describes only thermodynamics. It was found that the rate of cellular metabolism, which is influenced by temperament, decides the rate of energy release. This energy is partially utilized in performing work and the rest is transported to ECF. For a living body the rate change of entropy must be a negative quantity hence the heat transfer rate. The body fluids, depending on ratab/yabis temperament, mops up more or less amount of the free energy (heat) where the rest is available for dissipation to ambient. Owing to almost a constant body temperature and available ambient temperature, the temperature gradient between body and ambient is variable hence the rate of heat dissipation from the body.
