Effect of organic and inorganic nitrogen source on some growth parameters of wheat

The experiment was conducted at Malakandher Research Farm of NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar during 1998-99. Fields used in the experiment were previously sown to pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and left fallow in summer. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) straw. soybean (Glycine max), mungbean (Vigna radiata) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) residues were used as organic source of N. A recommended dose of fertilizer N (120 kg ha-1) and control treatments were also included in the experiment. Randomized complete block design having four replicates of each treatment in each field was used. Fallow field had significantly higher rate of emergence more number of plants per unit land area, earlier spike formation and taller plants. While wheat sown after millet proved inferior in emergence rate, plant m-2 and had delayed spike emergence. Fertilizer-N enhanced emergence while legume residue (soybean) achieved higher number of plant emergence in and taller plants but delayed flowering. The results indicated beneficial effect of leguminous residue particularly soybean plant material incorporation for wheat production.
