Yield and quality of potato as influenced by various levels of boron

Field experiments were conducted for two seasons (spring and autumn) on alluvial clay-loam soils (pH 7.8) to assess the effect of various levels (0,1,2 and 3 kg/ha) of boron (as borax), on the yield and quality of potato Desiree). Yield of tubers was linearly increased from 12.5 t in control to 14.7 t/ha by 3 kg B; ha. The response of spring crop to B application was better than that of autumn. Boron application also enhanced the dry matter content from 17.02 to 20.03% and that of starch from 10. 75 to 13.07%. In this respect 2 kg B/ha was a suitable dose. This dose was also sufficient to raise the vitamin C contents of tubers from 13.82 to 15.31 mg/100g. The uptake of nutrients (NPK and Na) was also enhanced by 2 and 3 kg B/ha. However, no significant difference between these two levels of B was observed, reflecting that 2 kg B/ha was the optimum dose to increase N content of the tubers from 15.2 to 16.5 g, P from 2.0 to 2.4 g, K from 20.8 to 22.1 g and Na from 0.17 to 0.28 g/kg dry matter.
