Effect of row orientation on yield and yield components of maize

Experiment has been designed to find out the best row direction and the most suitable variety of maize, which can give maximum grain yield. The treatments of the experiment were T1= V1D1 (Azam x east-west); T2= V1D2 (Azam north-south); T3= V2D1 (Sarhad-white x east-west); T4= V2D2= (Sarhad- white x north-south); T5= V3D1 (Ehsan x east-west); T6= V3D2 (ehsan x north- south); T7= V4D1 (Shaheen x east-west); T8= V4D2 (Shaheen x north-south). Data on days to tussling revealed that the row orientation as well as varieties exhibited significant differences. Days to maturity were significantly affected by row orientation and varieties. The row orientation significantly affected the leaf area of the crop in both seasons, while varieties had no significant differences in the leaf area in both seasons. The row orientation as well as varieties did not exhibit significant differences in kernel rows per cob. However, maximum kernel rows per cob were recorded in varieties Ehsan and Azam. North-south direction resulted in a significantly higher grain yield than the east-west direction both in spring and kharif seasons. No significant difference was found between the grain yield of the various varieties. The interaction of row orientation and varieties was non-significant for all the traits under study i.e. days to tasseling and maturity, leaf area, kernel rows per cob, 1000-grain weight and grain yield.
