Performance of maize varieties under different seed rates

An experiment on Performance of maize varieties under different seed rates was conducted at Malkandher Research Farm, NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar, Pakistan during 2002. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with split plot arrangements. Five varieties of maize (Sarhad white, Sarhad yellow, Pahari, Azam and Local variety) with five seed rates (10,20,30,40 and 50 kg ha-1) were used. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that the effect of varieties was significant on all parameters. The plots sown with Sarhad yellow gave maximum days to 50 % tussling, number of leaves plant-1, plant height, ear height, grain yield (3708 kg ha-1). Whereas, maximum biological yield, number of grains cob-1 was recorded from plots sown with Sarhad white. In case of seed rate 50 kg ha-1, gave maximum days to tussling, germination m-2 and biological yield was noted. While the plots seeded with 10 kg ha-1 gave maximum plant height, ear height, number of grains cob-1 and ear weight. Whereas, 20 Kg ha-1 seed rate gave maximum number of leaves plant-1. Maximum grain yield was recorded from plots sown with 40 kg ha-1. Interaction between varieties and seed rates had significantly affected all parameters except days to 50 % tussling. Maximum germination m-2 was noted in the plots sown with Pahari, Azam and Local variety when seeded with 50 kg ha- 1 seed rate. Maximum plant height, number of leaves plant-1, ear height was noted from the plots sown with Sarhad yellow and seeded with 10 kg ha-1 seed rate. Maximum grain yield was obtained from the plots sown with Sarhad yellow using seed rate of 30 kg ha-1. Maximum number of grains cob-1 was recorded from the plots sown with Sarhad white and seeded with 10 kg ha-1 seed rate.
