Genetic variability and traits correlation in wheat

Development of superior genotypes, is one of the prime objectives of all breeding programs. Genotypic variability and correlations of yield and yield related traits were determined at the Malakandher Farm, NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar during 2001-2002. The material comprised sixteen advanced breeding lines and two check cultivars. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were recorded on days to 50% heading, plant height, number of spikes m2, spikelets per spike, 1000-kernel weight, grains per spike and grain yield. Data of all the traits were statistically analyzed. Genotypes were significant for days to 50% heading, plant height, spikelets per spike, grain yield and. 1000- kernel weight. However, the genotypes were non-significantly different for spikes m2 and grains per spike. Phenotypic correlations of days to 50% heading with spikes m2 and 1000-kernel weight were significantly negative while the phenotypic correlations of plant height with spikelets per spike and 1000-kernel weight were significantly positive. Genotypic correlation of days to 50% heading with 1000-kernel weight was significantly negative, while that of plant height with 1000-kernel weight was significantly positive. Some of the breeding lines such as "GOMAM/FOW-2" and "CHAM-4" gave better grain yield and therefore, can be considered potential lines for future testing.
