Heavy metals content in Cephalopods

Attempts were made to study on heavy metal content in octopus and cuttlefish obtained from fish landing places in Samutprakarn, Samut Sakhon, Rayong, Songkhla and Nakhon si thammarat provinces during May to September, 1993. Heavy metals studied were mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd). Tissue digestion method for the analysis of Cd, Hg and Pb was conducted by wet ashing method using 30 percent nitric acid and heating at 140 deg C for 40 min, in teflon cup. The analysis for Cd and Pb content was performed on Varian Spectraa-40 atomic absorption (flame) while that for Hg was done on mercury monitor (Thermo Separation Product 3200). In case of As, AOAC method for digestion was applied and analysis for content was done on flameless atomic absorption (Perkin Elmer) with hydride generator. The analysis results showed that the contents of all heavy metals in both octopus and cuttlefish were below the standard level allowed in various countries. The average contents found in octopus and cuttlefish were respectively as follows: Cd:0.12-0.48 ppm and 0.06-0.09 ppm; Pb:0.06-0.31 ppm and 0.05-0.22 ppm; Hg:0.02=0.04 ppm and 0.03-0.06 ppm; As:0.1-0.33 ppm and 0.1-0.53 ppm.
