Planktonic pigments as biomarkers in coastal and estuarine environments

Sedimentary chlorophylls and carotenoids in coastal and estuarine water were seasonal variable and found during the phytoplankton blooms. Phytoplanktonic carotenoids containing 5, 6-epoxide groups such as tucoxanthin, peridinin and diadinoxanthin degraded rapidly both in the water column and surface sediments. Alloxanthin, Beta-carotene, diatoxanthin, canthaxanthin and lutein/zeaxanthin were relatively stable in the sediments with high deposition rate. These pigments can be used as biomarkers for quantifying and modelling of planktonic carbon inputs in coastal water and estuarine.
