Litchi fruit borer and appropriate control

Series of experiments were conducted at Chiangrai Horticultural Research Center and in the farmer orchards in Chiangrai province during November 1996-June 1999. The experiment on infestation period of litchi fruit borer, Conopomorphasinensis Bradley revealed that the infestation occurred on the young fruits from twenty days after fruit setting. However. only small number of the dropped fruits caused by the fruit borer. The infestation percentage of the fruit borer increased when the young green fruits developed to yellow and red mature fruits. Infestation percentage reached 50 percent when the fruits were at 50-60 days after fruit setting. The study on the efficacy of some insecticides, natural oils and fruit bagging showed that carbaryl, imidacloprid, cyfluthrin and chlorpyrifos/cypermethrin gave good control of the fruit borer at the same level as natural oils and fruit bagging, ranging between 2.88-10.85 percent of damaged fruits at the harvesting period. Whereas damage of the control treatment was 57.39 percent. However phytotoxic appeared on the fruits sprayed with natural oil. Appropriate control for litchi fruit borer are: -Collecting dropped fruits and pupa on the leaves, then destroy by burning, -Spraying with insecticides such as carbaryl, cyfluthrin, chlorpyrifos/cypermethrin and imidacloprid at 40 days after fruit setting at the rates of 45 g, 5, 30 and 10 ml per 20 liters of water, respectively, 2-3 times at 2 week intervals and -Bagging fruit when the fruits are at 40 days after fruit setting to reduce the residual effect and impact of insecticides to natural enemies and increase the quality of fruits
