[Biotechnologies in context of up-to-date social and ecological problems of the mankind]

The present review deals with biotechnologies and genetic engineering as new methods based on the last achievements of cell and molecular biology. There about 120 ornamental, fruit, cereal and other species of crops which are genetically modified by methods of molecular breeding. Considered are historical aspects of genetic engineering, its practical role for agriculture, prospects for the use while making genetically modified food products and medicines. The genetic engineering can be considered as the most attractive and socially and ecologically promising line of development of the future agriculture. Attention is paid to the simultaneously existing assumptions on to GMO's potential hazards. Therefore the issue of highly productive genetically modified varieties that which cannot be considered as the one, which is fully solved and ecologically safe. The conclusion is drawn on the necessity of introduction of the normative and legislation framework, which regulates the development of technologies and the use of GMO in Ukraine, in the order
